Answers to Your Questions - Frustrated with Sales Dept.

James A. DeSena, CSP

Question - "I'm frustrated with the sales department!! I'm in a small business that doesn't have meetings to set goals or make anyone accountable, just order takers. What do I do? I have to set goals and challenges for myself vs. my sales manager!!"

Response - Small businesses often operate in an informal environment. The person who is the sales manager may have been the strongest salesperson, but may not make the strongest sales manager.

You have a couple of choices:

1) As you say, set goals and challenges for yourself. That's what the best salespeople often do.

2) Inform your manager about your goals in a positive way.

3) If you find yourself out growing the opportunities at your present company, consider looking at opportunities elsewhere. If you are a top performing salesperson, you will be welcome at many companies that fully support their sales staff.

This question really raises a much larger issue about career development. What are your career goals? Will this company be able to help you fulfill them
